이태제 작가는 2019년 부터 스페인 갈리시아에 체류하며 셀타족 고대 마을과, 부모로부터 자녀에게 대물림해 내려오며 몇 천년 간 이어져온 그들의 전통, 그리고 삶의 방식을 이해하고 관찰해 왔습니다. 현 시대의 유목민으로 삶의 대부분을 모국이 아닌 타지에서 셀타족 후예를 배우자로 맞아 살아온 작가는 이 작업을 통해 전통과 함께하는 삶의 경이로움, 개인과 민족의 정체성, 그리고 자연과 인간의 공존에 대한 의미를 돌아보고자 했습니다. 천 년 이상 변색과 변함없이 보존 가능한 19세기 전통 프로세스이자 현존하는 수공 인화 기술상 가장 풍부한 표현 범위를 지닌 플래티넘 프린팅에는, 이들의 삶과 유산에 대한 존경과 이 다음 천년 세월을 넘어 전통과 방식이 계승되고 보존 될 수 있기를 염원하는 이태제 작가의 마음을 담았습니다.
“The wild horses of Galicia, living freely and proudly in the mountains and fields despite wolf attacks, frequent forest fires, and the muzzles of poachers, thrilled the heart of the photographer, a descendant of the equestrian people. Through the Celtas Galician tradition of ‘Rapa das Vestas’, where wild horses are shaved with bare hands every summer in the village of Sabucedo, we examine the coexistence of religion, culture, nature, and humans.”
Photographer TEYÉ has been living in Galicia since 2019, understanding and observing the ancient villages of the Celta people, their traditions that have been passed down from parents to children for thousands of years, and their way of life. The artist, who has spent most of his life as a modern-day nomad living in a foreign land with a Celta descendant as his spouse, wanted to look back on the wonders of life with tradition, the identity of individuals and nations, and the meaning of coexistence between nature and humans through this work. Platinum printing, a 19th-century traditional process that can be preserved for over a thousand years without discoloration or change and the richest range of expression among existing hand-printing techniques, contains artist TEYÉ's respect for their lives and heritage and his wish for the traditions and methods to be passed down and preserved for the next thousand years.
